Local Veterans Honored with Trip to Capitol

Portland, ME -  On Saturday, June 28th, twenty-four veterans will fly out of the Portland International Jetport headed south for Washington DC to visit national memorials honoring their service. The trip is made possible by Honor Flight New England, a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for their service. Through donations, the organization provides transportation to the nation’s capital to visit and reflect at their memorials, many of whom are seeing them for the first time. Priority for the trips is given to senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with veterans who are ill.

The veterans will be escorted via Portland Police motorcade along with Maine Patriot Guard Riders from the Clarion Hotel to the airport. Arrival at the airport is scheduled for 4:30 AM where they will be met by the Portland Police and Fire Color Guard as well as volunteers and well wishers.  The community is welcomed and encouraged to come out to the Jetport and help send these heroes off on the their journey.  The group is scheduled to return from Washington DC later that evening at 10:35 PM.
